In this slideshow/lecture we will first view the earliest known tarot trumps, from Milan and Ferrara, 1440-1480. The sequence will be seen, on the whole, to present an orthodox Christian journey through life and and toward union with the Divine. Then we will go through the sequence again, this time using the so-called "Marseille" tarot, from its earliest images in 1500 milan to its culmination in 1760 Marseille. We will find numerous details that seem to allude to Egyptian influenced myths and mystery cults of the Roman Empire, as described by ancient authors. We will also view images from ancient times for comparison. This historic perspective gives new meaning to the tarot as an initiatory sequence.
